The Self Help Center’s goal is to help people make the changes necessary to discover contentment and fulfillment in
life.
To provide 24 hour crisis intervention, emergency safe house, and comprehensive supportive services to domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, stalking, elder abuse victims, and substance use treatment; and reduce future cycles of violence.
Organized in 1978, Self Help Center Inc. is a private, not-for-profit community agency designated by Natrona County and the State of Wyoming to offer support and services to victims of domestic violence, child abuse, stalking, elder abuse, sexual assault, family treatment and to substance abusing individuals.
Our philosophy and subsequent policies are to assure inclusion and respect for all persons regardless of cultural background, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, criminal history, or medical status among other factors. Each program may impose reasonable programmatic restrictions that are intended to support service and/or therapeutic goals of the program, meet restrictions of government grants and funding, or required by limitations of the program to provide services specific to a person.
From its initial modest beginnings and reliance on volunteers and donated resources, SHC has developed into a model program developing specific and comprehensive programs meeting diverse needs of victims, batterers, families and the community. SHC programs are designed and implemented to work with all available community resources to provide a fully comprehensive family violence and sexual abuse intervention, re-education, prevention, and substance abuse treatment effort. These programs, working together, have enhanced the efficient and effective accomplishment of SHC’s mission. They are described as follows:
Safe house: SHC owns and operates the only Safe House in Natrona County. Safe house provides temporary shelter for female victims and their children at no cost.
24-Hour Hotline: This service links victims to an advocate who provides information and support to callers, refers victims to shelter, and arranges or provides in-person support of victims at the hospital. Our hotline is also available for emergency services to clients of programs of the Self Help Center Inc.
Advocacy Services: Advocates provide immediate direct assistance in aiding victims in obtaining medical care, interacting with the criminal justice system, referrals to local services and legal support agencies, and in obtaining Domestic Violence and Stalking Protection Orders.
One-On-One Education and Support: Provide clients with information, education, and emotional support. Assist clients in reviewing options available to victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
Individual and Group Therapy: Licensed professional therapists are available to provide both individual and group therapy to meet a variety of mental health and victim issues ranging from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, substance use issues, etc.
Support Groups: Provide victims a regular time to meet together to share problem-solving techniques, express concerns and feelings in a supportive setting. Assist in sharing experiences and information through networking
Transitional Housing/Rapid Re-Housing (Turning Point): Turning Point transitional housing offers a safe and nurturing group-living environment for victims and their children needing housing and supportive services beyond the scope of the safe house. Transitional housing residents continue to receive victim advocacy and support while learning life and self-sufficiency skills necessary for stabilizing their lives and the lives of their children while improving physical and emotional health.
P.A.V.E. (People Against Violence Everywhere): PAVE is a prevention-education program targeting school age children through teenagers. Prevention Education staff work from a school and community-based approach educating children and youth about personal safety, family violence, dating violence, sexual assault, child abuse, conflict resolution, personal problem solving, thinking errors and other related topics. Additionally, prevention educations staff facilitates in-school support groups, one-on-one and group mentoring.
CORE: The CORE (Conservation, Outdoor Recreation and Education) program is a primary component of PAVE, and offers children and youth outdoor education, service-learning projects and activities both daily and during extended summer camping trips. Youth are taught survival skills, enjoyment and respect of the outdoors while fostering critical mentoring relationships with positive adult role models. These relationships are further developed throughout the year through ongoing mentoring and school-based activities (PAVE).
Substance Abuse Assessments, .5 DUI Education Class, .5 Cannabis Education Class, Relapse Prevention, and Intensive Outpatient Services for Adults: Curriculum Procedures are as follows; Licensed and certified staff offer assessment and treatment services to adults wanting to recover from substance abuse addictions and thinking errors. Curriculum designed for improving cognitive thinking skills, conflict-resolution and effective problem solving is taught and reinforced -- emphasizing positive and nurturing parenting and interpersonal relationships. The curriculum that is utilized for the .5 DUI education class is the Change Companies. The Curriculum that is used for .5 Cannabis Education is Hazelden. The Curriculum that is used for Relapse Prevention is Hazelden-Betty Ford. A case record is kept on each individual client which contains correspondence relative to the client’s treatment. There will be a signed release of information for all correspondences when applicable [Wyoming Department of Health Rules and Regulations for Substance Abuse Standards Chapter 4, Section 10 DUI/MIP Education Programs].
